Toddler sleep guide

How to use an okay-to-wake clock with a toddler.

The clock works best when the child understands what the colors mean and the adults respond consistently to the signal.

Explain the rule while everyone is awake

Do not wait until the middle of the night to introduce the idea. Show the sleep color and wake color during the day and explain the meaning in simple language.

Start with an achievable wake time

If a child usually wakes very early, an immediate large change can be difficult. Some families begin closer to the child's normal wake time and adjust gradually.

Pair the color with a predictable response

When the wake color appears, make morning feel clearly different: open curtains, greet the child, start breakfast or begin the normal morning routine. Consistency helps the color gain meaning.

Keep nighttime interactions boring and calm

If the child wakes during sleep time, keep the response brief and low-stimulation when appropriate. The clock should reinforce the routine, not become a new source of entertainment.

Children have different sleep needs and may wake for hunger, illness, nightmares, toileting or comfort. A color clock should not replace appropriate caregiving or medical guidance.
